Occupational Therapy Services

Occupational Therapists are professionals who work with children and their families to support their participation in their everyday activities. The term ‘occupation’ is used to describe all the everyday things we do in our life roles, but also the things we do to be who we are, the things we do to create a meaningful life and to engage with wider society and culture.

  • Supporting the child’s ability to engage in their everyday routines, feeding, toileting, dressing, mealtimes, showering/bathing and sleeping.

  • Supporting the child’s participation in meaningful and enjoyable play and leisure activities, such as pretend play, collaborative play with other children, friendship skills, leisure and sporting activities.

    • Emotional regulation (managing emotions)

    • Problem solving

    • Fine motor skill development (including drawing, handwriting, cutting, typing)

    • Gross motor skill development (jumping, hoping, throwing, catching and kicking, etc)

    • Access and participation to their environment (for example, climbing, riding a bike, access to playground equipment)

    • Classroom skills: such as following the routine, executive functioning, focusing for engagement in set activities, as well as organising themselves and their belongings.

Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA)

Mustard Seed Occupational Therapy also provides Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA).

A FCA is an assessment of a person’s functional performance of activities in their home and community.

The purpose is to provide a comprehensive assessment of a person’s needs and goals. This includes identifying their level of independence and the level of assistance they require within the functional domains:

  • Includes being understood in spoken, written, or sign language, understanding others, and the ability to express needs.

  • Includes making and keeping friends, interacting with the community, behaving within limits accepted by others, and the ability to cope with one’s feelings and emotions in a social context.

  • Includes understanding and remembering information, learning new things, and practicing and using new skills. Learning does not include educational supports.

  • Means the ability of a person to move around the home and community to undertake ordinary activities of daily living requiring the use of limbs.

  • Relates to activities related to personal care, hygiene, grooming, feeding oneself, and the ability to care for one’s own health care needs.

  • Means the cognitive capacity to organise one’s life, to plan and make decisions, and to take responsibility for oneself. This includes completing daily tasks, making decisions, problem solving, and managing finances.

Mobile Occupational Therapy Provider

We offer mobile Occupational Therapy in Perth. We conduct Occupational Therapy sessions in the home, school, daycare and community settings. We offer Occupational Therapy services to plan-managed and self-managed participants of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Our therapy is designed to be engaging, and fun, while also incorporating evidence-based techniques.

Mobile occupational therapy is not just easier for your family; there are actually a lot of therapeutic benefits.

    • Children are more comfortable in their own setting. In the home, childcare or school environment, children feel more secure and happy, when compared to an unfamiliar clinical setting. This helps them to better engage in therapy activities and enjoy the sessions.

    • Practicing therapy goals in functional activities leads to greater outcomes. At home or school visits we work with parents and teachers to demonstrate how to practise therapy skills in real everyday situations. This makes it easier to get practise in during the week and helps your child achieve their goals faster.

    • Research shows that therapy in natural settings increases generalisation of skills. This means that the skills your child is working on are quickly adapted into their everyday life.

    • Less time taken out of your week. You are able to be involved in the sessions, whilst also being at home for other children or urgent things that you need to do.
